Ardagh Group released a new 1.5 liter bottle that weighs 670 grams, or 24 ounces, making it compliant with new standards for lightweight bottles by the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO). In addition to the 1.5 liter Bordeaux bottle, Ardagh Group currently offers a collection of ten 750ml bottles and one 1 liter bottle in compliance with LCBO standards.

Consumer Physics has developed what it claims is the “world’s first molecular sensor that fits in the palm of your hand.” The SCiO scanner uses near infrared spectroscopy to generate a spectrum of the material being analyzed.

Parker Domnick Hunters’s Bevcheck and Bevcheck Plus filter testing devices are designed to test the integrity of membrane filters with the pressure decay method. The Bevcheck device is a handheld unit that can also be mounted directly to a filter housing. Bevcheck Plus is an automated unit that runs the entire test cycle.

Tonnellerie Quintessence unveiled the Perle de Quintessence, which is a truncated, oval-shaped barrel that takes its name from its teardrop silhouette. The barrel is meant for wine fermentation and was designed and built in collaboration with Grand Cru Classé Chateau Fonplégade in St. Emilion, France.

Vin65 partnered with Gliding Eagle to offer wineries shipping services to China. Gliding Eagle will pick up wine in the Napa, Calif., area and the company promises to get wine to Hong Kong in four days or main land China in 12.

G3 and Zipz are now offering custom bottling and packaging with the Zipz single serve wine package. The PET package features patented CleanWrap technology designed to be used with G3’s custom-built bottling line. According to the G3 and Zipz, wines sealed in the package stay fresh up to 12 months.

Reed Wax is now offering “twist off” bottle dipping and sealing wax. The new wax eliminates the need for tear tape. “Just grab the wax at the T-top and twist for separation,” said Brian Walsh, Reed Wax’s product development director.

Sonoma Cast Stone unveiled the NuBarrel, a concrete, stackable tank designed as an alternative for oak barrels. The new tank holds as much wine as four standard barrels but will last for nearly 40 years, according to the manufacturer. The NuBarrel also features an immersion sleeve to add or remove oak chips as needed.

Stober Drives Inc., released a stainless steel, inline planetary gearbox specifically designed for sanitary food and beverage production. The unit can handle ratios of 4 to 100:1 and is adaptable to several NEMA C-frame motors, according to the manufacturer.

The Zebra fermentation vat by Tonnellerie Rousseau is assembled with alternating, 50-mm French oak staves that have been toasted in the traditional manner over open fires with staves that were toasted in a convection oven. The two toasting methods produce staves of contrasting color thus giving the vats their striped appearance.

The SC100 chips by Boise France of Vivelys are designed to bring “richness, mellowness and sweetness” to red, rosé and white wines that risk tasting too harsh. With an extraction time of five weeks, the chips can be used at various stages of the winemaking process as needed. The typical dosing rate is 1 to 5 grams per liter depending on the impact desired.
