I look back on those times, and the company of Leon Adams, Maynard Amerine, Joe Heitz, Frank Prial, Frank Schoonmaker, a dozen engaged and genial commentators, and the wines of Beaulieu, Louis Martini, Italian Swiss Colony, Almaden and Wente, of course. Once I start, I could bring back hundreds of memories — of valleys in a state of golden innocence, vineyards as exceptions in the landscape, and absolutely no food joints of any kind. Except the Grapevine Inn.

December 2017The Frozen Genetics of International Wine Cultivars
If you are growing one of the 20 or so most popular international wine grape varieties, you are dealing with a very narrow slice of the genetic heritage of the genus Vitis. Chances are that the variety in your vineyard originated somewhere in the 15th or 16th century in the middle of Europe. Most certainly, the genetic makeup of your vines predates the introduction of a suite of pests from North America, such as grape phylloxera, powdery mildew, downy mildew and black rot. Classic wine grape cultivars and their names have spread throughout the globe, but their genetics are frozen in the Middle Ages.
This is in stark contrast to other horticultural and agronomic crops. What if fruit breeding had stopped in the 1600s? Peaches would be the size of cherries, watermelons would have six small pockets of red flesh divided by fleshy white tissue, and bananas would have large seeds. Are traditional wine grape varieties—wonderful as they are—impervious to improvement?
Many of the name-brand cultivars are closely related to each other. A decade ago, a USDA unit based at Cornell University produced a custom-made genetic array (dubbed the “SNP chip”) that provided a way to detect more than 5,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and allowed a 100-fold more detailed map of the grape genome than was previously possible.
They tested 583 unique grape cultivars from germplasm collections and found that roughly 75% of them were closely related (siblings or parent-offspring) to at least one other cultivar (Myles et al. 2011). More than half (58%) were part of a single genetic network through sibling/parent relationships.
It’s now common knowledge that Cabernet Sauvignon was the offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc (Bowers & Meredith, 1997). But the map from Myles et al. (2011) shows that many of the most well-known cultivars are just one or two steps distant from four cultivars: Riesling, Traminer, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc. If not siblings or progeny, many are at least first or second cousins.
The genetics are frozen, but the rest of the grapevine ecosystem has not stood still. Phylloxera caused Europeans to graft their classic wine grapes onto resistant American rootstocks. Powdery mildew prompted the introduction of sulfur and Bordeaux mixture. And currently, downy mildew, which grows explosively and can defoliate a vineyard in a week under the right conditions, is the key pathogen driving spray programs in Europe and eastern North America.
There are newer challenges not encountered by V. vinifera during the species’ evolution, such as Pierce’s disease and grapevine red blotch disease. These are challenges that the current varieties have not been selected to resist.

November 2017Direct Shipping Is Not a Zero-Sum Game
Earlier this year, I was having lunch in Boston with a key account manager from our Massachusetts distributor. We were talking about what I’d done dduring my last visit, which included a really cool dinner at Blue Ginger (sadly, now closed) that had such a large consumer response they had to move the dinner into a larger room. I also conducted a sold-out tasting seminar at the terrific retailer Gordon’s in Waltham. I mentioned that we’d sent news about the events out to our mailing list and wine club members, and that I thought this was a big reason why we’d gotten such a good turnout for the events. His response took me by surprise, though it shouldn’t have. He said, “I know, we oppose direct shipping, but I guess it can have its uses.”
I’ve been meaning ever since to write about how misunderstood direct shipping is among most actors in the wholesale market, and how short sighted their opposition to it is. After all, our wholesale business in Massachusetts is up 38% this year and was up in 2016 and 2015 after nearly a decade of essentially flat sales. Our Massachusetts wholesaler is on pace to sell 55% more wine than it did in 2014. Most businesses would kill for this sort of performance. So, what turned things around?
I would submit that the biggest factor was that in February 2015, a new law brought Massachusetts into the growing majority of states that allow direct shipping of wine.
At first, it seems counter intuitive that opening up a state to shipments from wineries in other states should help the sales of that winery’s wholesaler. Doesn’t each sale offset another in-state sale? Not really. Here’s why the ability for a winery to ship to a state should generally increase their wholesale sales there:

October 2017The Business of Relationships: Lessons from the South Bronx
A few weeks ago I attended a day-long seminar covering successful approaches to running a tasting room and wine club. The audience was a wide array of 50-60 industry professionals interested in learning how to grow or improve their current tasting rooms and wine clubs. As I took my seat at the seminar, I was hopeful that I would hear the nugget of wisdom that would unlock the mysteries of this industry I now find myself in.
However, for all the good advice that I quickly tried to write down, I was surprised the one thing that didn’t get a lot of mention or discussion was the only thing I’ve found so far as our winery’s never-fail, tried-and-tested, key to success strategy: the importance of relationships, specifically the importance of building relationships with our consumers.
As someone who grew up in Lodi, Calif., as the daughter of a winemaker and now manages most of the family business, I am both a “native” and a “newcomer” to the wine world. My family’s small estate wine-production facility, The Lucas Winery, was one of the first wineries in Lodi when it began in 1978. We make approximately 2,000 cases per year, primarily Zinfandel and Chardonnay. My father, David Lucas, and my step-mother, Heather Pyle-Lucas, are wine industry veterans and met when both worked at Robert Mondavi Winery.
As brief background, I spent 15 years of my career as a teacher and administrator at both the high school and middle school levels in the South Bronx. Having helped create and run a successful public school in New York City, I now spend most of my time consulting with other schools and districts interested in trying our strategies in their own schools. I bring this up because what I learned early in my career was that we could only teach students if they actually came to school, and it was much easier to keep them in school than to get them to return once they stopped coming.
What is the never-fail, tried-and-tested key to our success strategy to keeping kids in school? Build relationships with them. This was core to everything we did. We hired teachers who had great rapport with kids, we created systems and structures to involve the whole family and extend services to them. We visited homes during the summer, took school-wide camping trips, and we made sure that every kid in our building knew they had an adult (their “advisor”) who would notice if they were absent, would advocate for them and who cared about their well-being. Our students came to school. They graduated. They went to college.
So, when I stepped back into the family business in 2015, I saw immediately a similar need to invest in relationships. As I tried to understand this new industry, I relied on the only experience I knew. I saw our wine club as a type of school and our wine club members as our students (our most important people).
What did they need to stay in? To attend? To show up? Could it be the same thing that high school students in the South Bronx needed? Are we all really that similar? I believe the answer is yes. Our club members needed a relationship with our business not as customers, but as people. So for the past two years, our focus and priority as a business has been on building relationships with our wine club members.
By every metric our wine club is outperforming the industry norm. Our new membership signups increased last year by 50%, and our net wine club growth was up nearly 10% over last year. More importantly, we are beginning to see a consistent trend in performance. It’s not a fluke. Our wine club is growing. Our members are staying.
To be clear, we had no idea what we were doing when we began making changes to our current wine club program, and we were hesitant. Like most small wineries, our wine club is a huge part of our business, and we didn’t want to jeopardize it. We turned to some experts for a gut check. We enlisted the help of a marketing and advertising agency, Vault 49, in New York City. Owned by a dear friend, we called in a favor and spent time working with them to rediscover what makes us authentic and unique. This was the first of three steps in focusing on relationships:

September 2017Perspectives on Applied Physiology in Support of Viticulture
Developing a long-term physiology research program that has relevance to practical fruit production requires an integrated approach of studying the physiology of practical problems as well as generating fundamental knowledge of physiological principles that underpin practice. My program emphasized understanding of the physiological principles of carbon and water physiology, especially integrated with growth and development, environmental responses and interactions with cultural practices. As such, we have used many different research methods, from measuring growth, organ and whole-plant gas exchange, soil and plant water relations, and root growth and development.
The emphasis on understanding physiological principles is informed by a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “The value of a principle is in the number of things that it will explain.” This can be manifested in not only explaining past results, but also in being able to better predict results under different conditions. To help with both of these, I incorporated modeling into my program, integrated with measurements.
Modeling has been an extremely valuable research tool for several reasons. Models can help integrate measurements taken only at intervals, evaluate the state of knowledge of our systems, elucidate the key processes regulating system behavior, help understand system dynamics and predict performance under differing conditions. Of course, as great simplifications of complex systems, they are rarely precise. However, the usefulness for specific questions is more important than absolute accuracy. Finally, it is important to understand that models do not produce answers, only quantitative hypotheses to test.
I have addressed many issues in 40 years of research, but three examples indicate how physiology can be useful to practical farming.

In 1978, the United States adopted a formal wine appellation system with a new category of American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). Since then, more than 225 AVAs have been established in 32 states. And while some AVAs have been wildly successful and are recognized today around the world, others have “died on the vine.”
From 2007 to 2011, the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) conducted a thorough reassessment of the AVA program. While this review was welcome, it was an opportunity lost. As I learned after more than 30 years of battles over the establishment and protection of AVAs, the appellation program is in need of change. With the benefit of hindsight and with the recognition that our AVAs now compete on the world stage, I believe that the TTB can—and must—take steps to enhance the credibility of U.S. appellations.

The timely piece that Dong Li wrote for the July 2015 issue of Wines & Vines asked a question that could be of significant commercial relevance for California vintners: Which wines will China be drinking in 10 years?
While China may not have a wine culture we westerners recognize, how many Americans are aware that this Asian powerhouse is already the globe’s largest market for red wines and second only to Spain in vineyard surface area with nearly 2 million acres?
China seems very familiar to U.S. consumers, but that is largely because “Product of China” appears on innumerable items. In truth, we outsiders—especially in the West—are woefully ignorant of this ancient land. This is understandable given the historical isolation of the Middle Kingdom, and considering the political barriers that have made access quite difficult. Grapevine certification programs are based on the premise that the foundation planting stocks propagated by nursery growers have been tested and shown to be free of pathogens of concern to the industry. Pathogen testing saves growers millions of dollars by providing a good (though not perfect) level of protection from pathogens that shorten the productive life of vineyards and reduce productivity and grape quality.
There are three basic methods of verifying that grapevines are free of harmful viral pathogens: 1) inoculating indicator plants (mostly herbaceous ones) with tissue from the grapevine being tested; 2) a process called “woody indexing,” which involves grafting buds on to a grapevine variety that expresses symptoms; and 3) laboratory testing.

May 2015How to Get the Most From an AVA Appraisal
Winegrowers in well-regarded appellations have been neglecting to make the best investment they can: the amortization of their vineyard’s appellation value. When a grower purchases a vineyard, he purchases not only the land and the vineyard planted on it, but also an intangible asset—the right for his grapes to be bottled and labeled with the name of the American Viticutural Area (AVA).
This distinction is important, as land cannot be depreciated as an expense against income. The intangible asset’s value, however, can be amortized over the course of 15 years. This rule applies to any vineyards purchased after 1993. It only applies to vineyards whose appellation actually creates value beyond what the land itself creates. For instance, vineyard land does not sell for a premium because it is in the Madera AVA, but it does sell at a premium because it is in the Oakville AVA. The former has no AVA value to appraise and amortize; the latter most certainly does.

November 2014Regulations in the Works for Napa River, Sonoma Creek
Publication of draft General Waste Discharge Requirements (WDRs) for vineyards in the Napa River and Sonoma Creek watersheds is tentatively scheduled for January-May 2015, according to Mike Napolitano, engineering geologist with the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB).
The General WDRs will take the place of the Waiver of Waste Discharge Requirements regulatory arrangement that the RWQCB offered to the growers in 2013. It was rejected by growers and environmental groups alike.
This is an issue because a long-established program of water quality assessment, set out for all bodies of water in the United States in the Clean Water Act of 1972, has found the Napa River and Sonoma Creek watersheds to be impaired due to excessive sedimentation. Wine grape vineyards are among the potential sediment sources that are drawing increased scrutiny. The General WDRs would regulate discharges in order to achieve the performance standards for sediment and storm runoff set forth in the sediment Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for Napa River and Sonoma Creek, with the overarching goals of reducing nonpoint source pollutant discharges from vineyards and protecting and enhancing beneficial uses including the protection of anadromous fish habitat.
The proposed General WDRs would regulate discharges from vineyards in the Napa River and Sonoma Creek watersheds. The General WDRs would apply to a group of new and existing vineyards (including replants) based on eligibility criteria described in the notice of preparation and initial study. The eligible vineyards would, in general, be required to:
1. Submit a Notice of Intent to comply,
2. Prepare a Farm Water Quality Plan that identifies potential sediment sources and management practices to reduce those discharges,
3. Implement the chosen management practices,
4. Submit an annual compliance report that would identify what actions were taken to control sediment discharges.
A public California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) scoping meeting for the proposed new regulation was held July 23, 2014, in Napa and provided the opportunity for the RWQCB to update the community on how the issue is progressing.
RWQCB is anticipating a publication date for the draft general permit in early 2015, and that the EIR for the project would probably be released at the same time. This would be followed by a 45-day comment period, which would be the time for the regulated community to make their concerns known in writing.
Here are some of the specific features of these new draft regulations:
• Vineyards smaller than 5 acres would not be required to seek coverage under the General WDRs.
• Stream setback requirements would generally be 35 feet.
• County-approved erosion control plans (ECPs) would meet standards.
• General WDRs would involve inspections of the covered vineyard properties by the RWQCB staff at irregular intervals. They would be looking at roads in particular.
• Annual self-reporting to the RWQCB regarding effectiveness of erosion control measures would be required. There would be some sort of template for this report, and these reports would be public information.
• No individual water quality sampling would be required.
• The RWQCB would be sampling within the watersheds to monitor sedimentation in the gravel beds that anadromous fish use for egg laying.
• Individual site farm plans would be required. They would be kept onsite and not submitted to any public agency nor made public information.
According to the admittedly fast-tracked proposed project schedule, the general WDRs would go to the full RWQCB Board during the second half of 2015 for adoption. A major justification for the accelerated schedule is that virtually all of the CEQA environmental review that was completed for the WDR waiver process is felt to be applicable to the General WDRs covering the same activities.
The way things stand now, concerned parties will have only the 45 days following the release of the Draft WDRs next year to review the proposed regulation and submit comments.

On May 16, 2005, the Supreme Court of the United States issued an opinion in the case of Granholm vs. Heald that significantly altered the way state laws are created and challenged. By concluding that the states of Michigan and New York could not discriminate by allowing in-state wineries to ship directly to consumers while prohibiting out-of-state wineries from doing the same, the court affirmed that the “dormant” part of the Commerce Clause trumps the 21st Amendment to the Constitution. In other words, states have every ability to regulate alcoholic beverages within their borders, but only if the laws treat in-state and out-of-state suppliers evenhandedly.
Exactly five years after the landmark Granholm ruling, the industry is grappling with what could be another seismic shift. HR 5034, crafted by the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) and supported by the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA), would “reaffirm and protect the primary authority of states to regulate alcoholic beverages.”READ MORE »

But under longstanding federal regulations, wineries don’t have the option, since country appellation wines are prohibited from bearing a vintage date. Sans soufre. Without sulfur. Everything sounds more profound in French. The average consumer has a vague fear of sulfites anyway, along with nitrates and MSG. Winemakers always point out that some sulfur is produced naturally during fermentation, but we all get nervous when free sulfur dips below 25 ppm. A little at the crusher keeps bad bugs away, while reductively made whites swallow hundreds of grams per ton. Sulfur is the most important additive in preserving wine quality. Beginning Oct. 1, direct shipment from wineries to consumers became legal, but only as long as the winery in question produced less than 150,000 gallons of wine annually. I'm going to make a prediction. I reckon the next battleground in the wine world will be the controversial use of genetically modified (GM) yeasts in winemaking. Plenty of these genetically modified strains already exist in laboratories around the globe, but they haven't previously been commercialized because of the negative reactions of consumers to GM food products. Scientists are engineering beneficial traits into wine yeasts, even though they know they won't be useful for commercial winemaking for the foreseeable future, for two reasons. First, they're betting that public opposition to GM technology will one day recede, at which point they'll be in a good position to move. Second, they can learn a lot of useful information from using these introduced genes, which will then inform conventional breeding and selection programs.READ MORE »

This is in sharp contrast to states such as Indiana, where the competition is "open" and entries are encouraged from all 50 states and foreign countries.
