Washington has a new AVA

Snipes Mountain, near Outlook in Yakima County, was appoved by the TTB as an American Viticultural Area. It's the second smallest appellation in the state; approximately 20 wineries use grapes from the area, which encompasses 4,145 acres.

Washington event nets $180,000

The annual Celebration of Washington Wines dinner and auction Jan. 24 netted the figure, bringing total contributions to the Washington State University viticulture and enology program to more than $1 million in the past eight years. The gala was celebrated at Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville.

Walla Walla's Mike Paul dies at 58

Mike Paul, a pioneering Walla Walla vintner and owner of Patrick M. Paul Vineyards, died at home on Jan. 16. The tiny boutique winery, producing under 1,000 cases yearly, was best known for Cabernet Franc sourced from estate vineyards planted in 1984. Paul co-hosted a radio talk show segment, "On the Grapevine," and was an originating member and associate chair of the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance Board. He's survived by his wife and winery partner, Teresa.

Gary Andrus dies at 63

Robert Gary Andrus, co-founder of Napa's Pine Ridge Winery and Archery Summit Estate in Oregon's Willamette Valley, and co-owner of Gypsy Dancer Estates, Cornelius, Ore., died of complications from pneumonia Jan. 30. He was considered a mentor by many Oregon winemakers, and had been a leader in the movement to popularize appellations in America. He is survived by five children.
