Henick-Kling to lead WSU program
Dr. Thomas Henick-Kling, the much-honored long-time grape and wine researcher at New York's Cornell University who last year became an enology professor and director of the national Wine and Grape Industry Center at Charles Sturt University in Australia, will return to the U.S. next March. He was named director of the viticulture and enology program at Washington State University, Pullman.

Sumac Ridge promotes James
Sumac Ridge Estate Winery, Summerland, B.C., promoted Jason James from assistant winemaker to winemaker. He continues to work with senior winemaker Mark Wendenburg at the 90,000-case facility.

First tasting room opens in Kirkland
Northwest Cellars, Kirkland, Wash., on the east side of Seattle's Lake Washington, opened the city's first tasting room this fall. The winery focuses on custom blends and varietals sourced from Eastern Washington and Oregon vineyards. Since its founding in 2004, sales have grown from 600 to 2,700 cases annually.

Van Duzer names assistant winemaker
Van Duzer Vineyards, Dallas, Ore., appointed Mark Evich as assistant winemaker. Previously, he was assistant winemaker at 12th and Maple Winery in Dundee, Ore. He'll be working with winemaker Jim Kakacek at the 17,000-case winery, owned and farmed sustainably by Carl Thoma.

Montinore certified organic, Biodynamic
Montinore Estate, Forest Grove, Ore., was recently Demeter certified as Biodynamic, one of only seven in Oregon so recognized. It was also certified organic in August. With 230 acres of vineyards and annual production of 40,000 cases, it is one of Oregon's largest vineyard and winery operations. It was purchased in 2001 by Rudy Marchesi.
