Idaho county supports industry growth
Canyon County in southern Idaho hopes to become a wine attraction. The Caldwell/Canyon Economic Development Council created a new logo and announced plans to promote tourism in the area, which now has nine operating wineries. Sunny Slope Food and Wine Co. is creating a custom-crush facility; two wine-themed residential developments are being built, and the Caldwell branch of Oregon's Treasure Valley Community College plans to emphasize its winemaking program.
Cooper Mountain seeks carbon neutrality
Cooper Mountain Vineyards, a 17,000-case per year producer in Beaverton, Ore., plans to be certified carbon neutral early next year. Having inventoried its carbon emissions, the winery plans to reduce vehicle fuel use, use biodiesel and renewable or solar energy, retrofit electric outlets and continue employee education on conservation. Next it will purchase carbon offsets and request certification from the Climate Registry (climateregistry.org). Cooper Mountain is certified both organic and Biodynamic.
Oregon vintners launch Grand Cru Estates
Workers broke ground on a 13,000-square-foot winemaking facility in July in the Yamhill Carlton AVA. Grand Cru is designed for members, who may create their own premium Pinot Noir. Former Domaine Serene winemaker Tony Rynders will assist Laurent and Danielle Montalieu, proprietors of Domaine Danielle Laurent and Solena Cellars; and their partners Steve and Marian Bailey, owners of Bailey Estate Vineyards.
