Trio founds Walla Walla winery
Jason Huntley, Jamie Brown and Greg Harrington have formed a new winery in Walla Walla, Wash. Dubbed "Wines of Substance" it will focus on single-varietal wines from Washington state and host an interactive website to educate young wine enthusiasts. Learn more at winesofsubstance.com.
Okanagan winery promotes winemaker
See Ya Later Ranch, Okanagan Falls, B.C., promoted British Columbia native Mason Spink to assistant winemaker, working with senior winemaker Dave Carson. Previously, Spink had worked at See Ya Later in 2006, then returned to Ontario's Brock University to complete a degree in enology and viticulture prior to the 2007 crush.
Foundation funds industry programs
The Washington Wine Industry Foundation (WWIF) raised more than $80,000 at its annual auction fundraiser to benefit industry needs and help address the state's growing wine industry. WWIF also awards scholarships for viticulture and enology students from Benton, Yakima and Klickitat counties. For details, visit washingtonwinefoundation.org.
Washington expands program
Washington State University Extension, Prosser, expanded its online viticulture and enology professional certificate programs, which now will start yearly. The separate, two-year programs, provide academic and hands-on education to those who wish to enter the grape and wine industry without earning a degree. With start dates on a yearly rather than biennial basis, 30 additional students can enter the program annually.
Sokol Blosser honored by women's group
Susan Sokol Blosser received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Women for Winesense at the organization's "Celebrating Women in Wine" event in Napa Valley. Sokol Blosser, a founder of Sokol Blosser Winery in Dundee, Ore., retired earlier this year.
New AVA proposed for Yakima County
The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) is considering recognition of the Snipes Mountain viticultural area in Yakima County, Central Washington. TTB has solicited comments on the proposed AVA, which includes 4,145 acres. Read the proposal and comment online at regulations.gov on or before June 27.
Winemaker leaves Domaine Serene
Winemaker Tony Rynders left Domaine Serene Vineyards & Winery in Dayton, Ore., to pursue other interests. Former associate winemaker Drew Voit has returned as consulting winemaker to oversee operations until a new winemaker is retained.
