Ralph Pugliese dies at 73

Ralph Pugliese, who with his wife Patricia founded the 10,000-case Pugliese Vineyards in Cutchogue on the North Fork of Long Island, died May 16 at the age of 73. The first of 50 acres of grapes were planted in 1980, and the winery opened in 1986. The Puglieses’ four children will continue the winery as a family operation with Peter Pugliese as winemaker and Lawrence Pugliese as vineyard manager. Details: pugliesevineyards.com.

Big Cork plants in Maryland
Big Cork Vineyards recently planted 22 acres of 13 cultivars in Washington County, Md., utilizing state-of-the-art laser equipment from Benchmark Vineyard Planting. Planting took place over six days and consisted of seven red cultivars: Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Nebbiolo, Barbera and Syrah. Six white cultivars included Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Orange, Muscat Canelli, Chardonnay and Vidal. The vineyard is expected to produce 5,000 cases of wine annually.
