Midwest Schools Host Grapegrowing Workshops

Texas, Oklahoma and Indiana universities encourage new growing/winemaking enterprises

Texas AgriLife Extension Service will sponsor a winegrower workshop program Oct. 12 at Los Pinos Ranch Vineyards, 658 CR 1244, Pittsburg, Texas. The program is aimed at those interested in commercial winegrape production. Cost is $125 per person or $200 per couple, including educational materials and lunch. Register here.

Oklahoma State University’s Department of horticulture and Landscape Architecture and the Lincoln County Grape Growers Association will host a “So You Want to Grow Grapes?” seminar Oct. 9. Industry specialist will share their expertise in all aspects of grapegrowing, including site and variety selection, vineyard management, fruit quality and harvest timing, Oklahoma grape insects and Oklahoma grape diseases. Participants will receive the OSU publication Handbook to Oklahoma Vineyard Establishment and Management; A Pocket Guide to Oklahoma Grape Diseases, Insects and Other Disorders, and copies off all seminar presentations. Indiana’s Purdue University will offer tours of its vineyard at Meigs Farm in West Lafayette, Ind., on Oct. 13 for people interested in starting a commercial wine or grapegrowing business. Participants will learn the basics of juice and wine quality control, and are asked to bring a bottle of wine to share. The Day Camp is run by Purdue’s Wine Grape Action Team: Register here.
