Writing in the San Jose Mercury News, columnist Laurie Daniel offers extensive tasting notes this week on 2006 vintage Pinot Noir wines from the Santa Lucia Highlands. On the other coast, Wall Street Journal critics Gaiter and Brecher have lots of nice things to say about Barbera wines from Italy. And it is "pick a Prosecco" week for many wine writers choosing to offer advice for a Mother's Day brunch.  John Gillespie

Business Week: Wine critic Robert Parker on the wines of Domaine de Fondreche in Provence. Highest rated is the Cotes du Ventoux Il Etait Une Fois 2005.

Newsday: Staff writer Peter Gianotti recommends wines for Mother's and Father's Day celebrations. The chosen are Paul Jaboulet Aine 'Domaine de Thalabert' Crozes-Hermitage 2005, Charles Krug Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, M. USA Today: Wine columnist Jerry Shriver recommends Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Cabernet Sauvignon 2005.

Newark Star-Ledger: Wine writer John Foy on Prosecco for Mother's Day. Recommended is Bortolomiol Prosecco Prior Brut.

San Francisco Chronicle: The Chronicle tasting panel reviews Pinot Noir wines from the Russian River Valley. Highest rated is Dehlinger 2004.

San Francisco Chronicle: Wine editor Jon Bonne on esteemed wine critic Michael Broadbent, who joins the chorus who decry high-alcohol wines from California. In this light, barbs thro wn at both Shafer and Caymus.

Sacramento Bee: Wine columnist Mike Dunne offers complete listings of all medals awarded at the Calaveras Country Fair Wine Competition, the Pacific Coast Oyster Wine Competition, and the Riverside International Wine Competition.

Los Angeles Times: Staff writer Corie Brown on making wine in Malibu. Few commerical entries, but comments for Rosenthal Malibu Estate, Malibu Vineyards, and a couple of others.

San Diego Union Tribune: Wine columnist Robert Whitley on the results of the recent San Diego International Wine Competition. Several stellar entries mentioned, including Joseph Drouhin Chablis Fourchaume 2004, Frank Family Chardonnay 2006, Nobilo East Coast Pinot Gris 2007, and others. In the ratings section, Morellino di Scansano Riserva Val delle Rose 2004 garners 90 points.

Washington Post: Wine writers Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg on inexpensive Italian wines. Nice comments for Anime Pink NV, Monte Antico Toscana 2004, Bolla Valpolicella 2006, and Conserva Aglianico 2005. Karen's favorite is Villa Antinori Toscana Bianco 2006, while Andrew favors Michele Chiarlo Barbera d'Asti Superiore 'Le Orme' 2005.

Houston Chronicle: Wine columnist Dale Robertson on the Cade Winery in Napa Valley. Praise for the Cade Sauvignon Blanc 2007. Also, Allan Scott Sauvignon Blanc 2007 is recommended by a local Houston retailer.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Wine writer Gil Kulers has nice things to say about Inama Vin Soave 2006.

Arizona Republic: Wine columnist Mark Tarbell offers tasting notes on wines for Mother's Day celebrations. Top rated is Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Noir NV.

Minneapolis Star Tribune: Wine writer Bill Ward on wine styles. Nice comments for Sauvignon Blanc wines from Hogue, Ferrari-Carano, and Chalk Hill. Highlighted this week is Smith Wooten 'Gallaher Vineyard' Cabernet Franc 2006.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel: Wine writer Bob Hosmon on wines for Mother's Day. Recommended are Belle Glos Clark & Telephone Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006, Joseph Faiveley Bourgogne Chardonnay 2006, Dolce 2004, and Ca' del Solo Muscat 2007.

Nashville Tennessean: Wine columnist Frank Sutherland on wines from Napa Valley. Top choice in recent tasting is Folie a Deux Chardonnay 2006.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer: Wine columnist Richard Kinssies on wines to pair with oysters. Choices are Pinot Blanc from Amity Vineyards, Sauvignon Blanc wines from Chateau Ste. Michelle, Clayhouse, Clos du Bois, Covey Run, Dry Creek Vineyards, Girard, Kathryn Kennedy Winery, Robledo Winery, and Simi. Also favored are Pinot Gris wines from Van Duzer and Willamette Valley Vineyards.
