On the other coast, the tasting panel of the San Francisco Chronicle goes searching for wine pairings with oysters and comes up with many and varied matches. Business Week: Wine critic Robert Parker on Riesling wines from the Mosel. Highest rating goes to Dr. Loosen Berkasteler Lay Riesling Kabinett.

Bloomberg News Service: Wine columnist Elin McCoy on winemaker Francesco Valentini and his Azienda Agricola Valentini winery. Very high praise for the Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 2004, Cerasuolo 2005, and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2002.

Newsday: Staff writer Peter Gianotti recommends Selbach-Oster Rielsing Kabinett 2005, and J.J. Prum Wehlener Sonnenurh Spatlese 2004.

New York Sun: Wine columnist Peter Hellman on the opening of a Vino Volo wine bar at JFK airport. Nice comments for wines from Millbrook Vineyards, Herman Wiemer, J Vineyards, and others.

USA Today: Wine columnist Jerry Shriver recommends Grant Burge Barossa Vines Shiraz 2005, Madfish Riesling 2006, Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Riesling 2006, and Chaddsford Merlot 2005.

Newark Star-Ledger: Wine writer John Foy on the Alkoomi winery in Australia. Praise for the Alkoomi Frankland River Shiraz Viognier 2004.

San Francisco Chronicle: The Chronicle tasting panel reviews wines to pair with oysters. Highest rated is Domaine Vocoret Chablis Premier Cru Montmains 2005. Sacramento Bee: Wine columnist Mike Dunne on bargain wines. Dozens of medal winners from recent competitions cited, including offerings from Blackstone, Rex Goliath, J. Lohr, Clos du Bois, 3 Blind Moose, Trinchero Family Estate, Bogle, Cline, and Columbia Crest. Especially nice remarks for Puzzle Cabernet Sauvignon 2004.

San Jose Mercury News: Wine columnist Laurie Daniel on the Monte Rosso vineyard in Sonoma Valley. Praise for a good number of wines produced from Monte Rosso fruit, including the Louis Martini 'Gnarly Vine' Zinfandel 2005, Biale Monte Rosso Zinfandel 2005, Louis Martini Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon 2004, and Arrowood Vineyards Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon 2003.

San Diego Union Tribune: Wine columnist Robert Whitley on the Papapietro Perry winery. Extraordinary praise, especially for the Russian River Pinot Noir 2005, Leras Family Vineyard Pinot Noir 2005, and Pommard Clone Pinot Noir 2005.

Washington Post: Wine writers Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg on the growing interest in wine among chefs. On another page, tasting notes on chef choices, including Bellavista Franciacorta Cuvee Brut NV, Chateau Ste. Miami Herald: Wine columnist Fred Tasker on white wines made from Rhone varietals. Highest recommended are Tablas Creek Grenache Blanc 2005, Renaissance Viognier 2006, and Bonterra Viognier 2006.

Nashville Tennessean: Wine columnist Frank Sutherland on new wines from Italy. Top choice is Montepeloso Eneo IGT 2004.

Chicago Tribune: Wine reporter Bill Daley on Gewurztraminer. Top choices are Lucien Albrecht Reserve 2005, and Domaine Zind-Humbrecht 2005.
