Organic response

Re: Glenn McGourty's "Growers Transition to Organic (first installment of four-part series, July 2008): This is an amazing story on how to transition to organic. I started gardening for myself in an organic way starting in the 1970s, composting all fruit and vegetable materials, avoiding pesticides (marigolds are my garden's best friend). I've had a hard time believing that it's taken this long for the concept to finally be taken so seriously. That said, those who have been farming in an organic way have certainly been very busy defining and refining their practices, as this story indicates. Great story, Glenn!

Bountiful harvest from Paso vineyard

Thank you so much for getting the "Vineyards Growing Veggies" story in Wine & Vines (Headlines, July 2008). It has already expanded our reach. I was contacted by a student at Cal Poly who mentioned she read your article and offered to volunteer. She came out this weekend. Thus far, we have already harvested 536 pounds of fresh organic food. Thank you for helping to spread the good word.

Kelly also forwarded an e-mail from a small winery in Iowa, expressing interest in the concept, offering space on its 140-acre farm to host a similar program, and requesting advice on how to get started. More information can be found at urbanfarming.org.--Ed.

Off-base on off-radar

Regarding "Off-Radar Varietals" (June 2008) by Alan Goldfarb: I read this article with great interest. On page 47, Lemberger is referred to as a hybrid, which it is not. However, later in the text it is described as a vinifera--this would be correct. It cannot be both. Otherwise, an interesting article.
